Catatumbo lightning -
This is an atmospheric phenomenon in Venezuela. It occurs
only over the mouth of the Catatumbo River where it empties into Lake Maracaibo. When warm and cold fronts meet, it
forms the right conditions for this lightning. Not only that, but nearby
marshes emit methane gas, improving the electrical conductivity - which helps
cause these extended lightning strikes
Slave huts in Boniare
these huts were built and used for slaves working on the salt pans around the 1830's and are 5 ft high and 6 ft wide. Used only for sleeping as the slaves worked Monday to Friday and spent the weekends with their families (7 hour hike away). The huts originally had thatched roofs and are preserved by the admin as a reminder of the sins of their fathers and the historical cost of salt!
